Artifact Donation

Wayne Historical Preservation Society's Collections Management and Accessions Policy establishes detailed guidelines in line with state or federal laws, statutes or regulations,  for the acquisition, deaccession, loan, care and use of WHPS's collections.

Objects will only be accepted and accessioned into WHPS' collections when the Society can provide proper care, conservation, and storage under conditions insuring their preservation and availability, in keeping with professional standards.  Objects will only be accepted when the Title to the object is obtained free and clear, permanently, and without restrictions as to the use, exhibition, loan, or future disposition.   As WHPS has limited space and finances, it operates on a selective acquisition policy.  As a result, objects  that have no foreseeable use for exhibition, research, education or exchange, will not be accepted.

WHPS Acquisitions Policy

It is the policy of WHPS to acquire objects and or documents for the purpose of promoting the WHPS mission, ie the recording, preserving, collecting and displaying of historical records and artifacts from the Village of Wayne and its citizens, creating programs that will foster a sense of community and permanence in the Fox Valley.

  1. WHPS cannot appraise the value of any item donated.
  2. WHPS can only accept items with clear title. Donations cannot be restricted or encumbered by less than full property rights.
  3. WHPS can purchase or accept gifts/donations and will provide a deed of gift document. Donors must provide a written document explaining provenance and any relevant details.
  4. WHPS can cooperate with other individuals and/or organizations to loan items from the collection and borrow from others for program purposes.
  5. Donations must be able to be properly stored, preserved and displayed or made available for research.
  6. Donations shall not pose excessive administrative or financial burden to WHPS.
  7. Donations must retain integrity (defined as the state of being whole and undivided), identity (the item retains the distinctive qualities that make it unique), and authenticity (defined as genuine, bona fide, being actually what is claimed).
  8. Donated items that are found to not fulfill the WHPS mission can be sold for the purpose of enhancing the WHPS collection.
